Project Almanac Movie Review
In an age of CGI and computer-generated images, it was refreshing to see a movie that was filmed with actual actors (as opposed to the many films that have been shot with digital sets and then blown up to the size of IMAX screens).
For a time travel movie to be exciting, it needs to have more than just a guy in a lab and a couple of characters in the past. There has to be an aspect of time travel that was tied in with the story, or it becomes a straight up fantasy.
Project Almanac was a great example of a movie that does this. It uses the found footage format, so the time travel element was part of the plot, but the story was about more than just time travel. It doesn't just have a couple of characters in the past, but also has a central character who was very much alive in the present, which was what gives it a lot of tension.
As far as the acting, they're all quite good, though I would say that Michael Biehn, who plays the main character, Jack, has a little of trouble with the accent. It's very subtle, but if you watch closely, there's a slight thickness you don't get used to until the end of the film.
The story was intriguing, and even though I had no genuine interest in the project until after the trailer was released, after seeing the movie, I'm a big fan of the genre, so I'll definitely be looking out for more movies like this. There are no real weaknesses to be found here, and if you're an action movie fan, this movie you should see.
The found footage was good, although repetitive. We felt like the cast was not as strong as the idea. If this were a TV show, we would give it a good 7 or 8 out of 10. But as a movie, it was a solid 7 out of 10. Check out our review on Wish I Was Here Movie too.
